Some tricky maths…

TRICKY MATHS

During maths on Friday there were some very clever students who were able to solve some very tricky maths problems.

To solve these problems students needed to know what BIMDAS (or BODMAS) stands for. They also needed to have a very good knowledge of inverse relationships. If you are unsure what ‘BODMAS’ is, you can click here to hear a song about it. It isn’t a great song, but it may help.

Someone might want to do a mini project coming up with their own song or video for it. Let me know if you are interested!

Even though this work is harder than you need to know in Year 5, I would like to encourage some of my maths geniuses to give them a go! Don’t write the answers as comments, but you can ask questions or discuss them below. Also write a comment if you are trying to do them so that others know! Come to me when you have answers.

Question 1)             424 – (9 × 5) + 27 = 49 ÷ 7 × ( 4 × 4) + _________

Question 2)             14 × 6 – _______ + 100 = (3 × 12) + (11 × 12)

Remember BIMDAS for the last question!

Question 3)                 14 ÷ 7 + 9 × 3 = ( 3 + 8 ) × 3 ÷ 11 + _________

GOOD LUCK!!!

A visitor drops by…

A Visit from a Tortoise…

Today we were going about our normal Literacy work when a commotion came from Miss Deeks room. Mr Sim went to investigate and a Long Necked Tortoise (or turtle as some people say) was found in the garden, a long way from home.

We were able to bring it inside for a bit of a look and everyone was given the opportunity to CAREFULLY hold the tortoise to feel the shell and its skin. Sometimes sudden, unexpected, events happen that we can learn a lot from. This was one of those times. We did a quick investigation of its main features, did a search on the Internet and then quietly returned him to the lake where we think he came from.

The most important lesson we learnt was the importance to remain quiet, calm and careful around all living animals.

Check out the photos below. Click on a photo to enlarge it…

FETE 2011- SUGAR RUSH LANE!

THE FETE IS COMING….

The 2011 Harmony PS Fete is coming on Sunday September 25 and we need YOUR help ASAP! This will be a long term project that cannot be completed in a couple of weeks.

Students have been briefed on our ideas for our combined class stall (LA 18, 19 and 23) where we will be creating SUGAR RUSH LANE! This will be a combination of a drinks and nibbles stall, games and craft. We are currently looking for donations of small prizes for the different games. These prizes should only cost around $1 – $2 and can be found in cheap novelty stores like Red Dot, Thingz, Kmart or even Coles and Woolies. Please send these to school as soon as possible. If you have things at home that you think could be useful in the stall please let your classroom teacher know. Some students have offered ideas and ‘equipment’ but we obviously need your support with this, so please talk to your child about it.

Students, feel free to give ideas and ask questions below so that everyone can see your ideas and to tell you what they think! Parents, feel free to comment and add ideas as well. More information will follow as we begin to put this together over the term. Thank you for your support.

During the first part of Term 3 we will be looking at features of newspapers. To get our mind thinking about this, I want you to add comments to this blog, listing as many different newspapers as you can.

They can be local papers such as the Cockburn Gazette, state newspapers such as The West Australian or national newspapers such as The Australian. You may even know the names of other newspapers around the world.

If you have not read a newspaper before, see if you can have a read of one before Tuesday. You can even cut out your favourite or most interesting article and bring it in to share with me or the class.

Happy searching!
