Science IQ Competition

Science IQ Competition

Last week a team of four from each Year 6 class participated in Part 1 of a National Science IQ Competition.

The competition contained Science in Action questions with real world contexts. The questions were from most areas of science including scientific methods and investigation.

Well done to all who participated.

Salinity Experiment

Salinity Experiment

This term we have been growing beans to see the effect of salt on broad beans.

We had to start by planning our experiment. This involved working out what we were investigating and deciding on our independent, dependent and controlled variables.

We then recorded our plant growth over three weeks. We discovered that our broad bean in ‘fresh’ water grew a mammoth 31 centimetres, whereas our plants that were in salt water did not grow at all.

There were also many other things we observed. Can you tell us any of these?

Have a look at the photos below.

First Aid Course- St John Ambulance

First Aid Course- St John Ambulance

Yesterday we were lucky enough to have the St John Ambulance service run activities with us to teach us basic First Aid. We learnt so much and will now hopefully be able to help if someone is in trouble.

We learnt the DRS ABCD Action Plan for if someone is in trouble.

These stand for…

Danger
Response
Send for help

Airways
Breathing
Compressions
Defibrillation

Have a look at the photos of us practicing. Also, please leave a comment if you can remember anything else we learnt.

Ashlee’s Holiday- Day 7

Ashlee’s Holiday- Day

Today we got up at 0615 for our last fish at Blue Holes. I LOVE Kalbarri. When we got there it was low tide again, but not as low as the other day.

Hannah and I played in the sand hills. We made sand cakes. haha. Next Mum did breakfast for us and we had cocopops in our tent. I think I sent a picture of that this morning. We went for a walk on the rock pools and the water was nice and warm. There was a person snorkeling for his cray pots. He was crazy because there was very high surf and it was dangerous and crashing waves. He had a dog called Mambo. The dog was so scared because he thought his owner was drowning, but the dog loved me and we kept it company. I will put a picture of him on here. He was licking me and even followed me everywhere.

We rode our scooters when we got home and I played with Asha a friend that I made.

Next I went in the pool when Mum cooked the Tailor Dad caught at the beach this morning.

Then we packed lots of stuff for the trip tomorrow.

Dad took me fishing for the last time at the jetty this afternoon and I caught a Cod and two Fingermark Breams.   They were undersize though.

Dad cooked dinner on the BBQ and we had a last swim at the same time.   Then Mum wanted to do a better shot of our traditional sunset sister’s photo.

She is much more pleased with the new ones because last night the clouds were blocking the sunset. Tonight it was really lovely.    I LOVE KALBARRI!!!!!!!

Tomorrow we have to leave…… and drive all the way home again which is sooo long.  I am sad…

Ashlee’s Holiday- Day 6

Ashlee’s Holiday- Day 6

Thursday Diary… fun fun fun..

Today I got woken up so early by Dad going out fishing at 6.30 I couldn’t get back to sleep so I read for a while and finished another book.

I got up at 7.15. When Dad got home we had some breakfast of pancakes Mum made, then we went down to the river and had a paddle around in the boat. It was so windy and wavey so we didn’t do it for long. Hannah and I had a bit of a walk and then we went back to the unit.  Hannah and I rode our scooters around for ages and made a new friend called Asher. We all played hide and seek chasey. Next we had a swim.  Then Mum wanted to take our traditional photo on the river banks with the sunset behind us… she was really disappointed because the sun was behind clouds.   This afternoon we also went fishing on the jetty. I caught lots of fish but they were all undersized.  I really wanted to catch a black bream because they taste so yummy. But there was none around.

Mum bought us all dinner at the pub. I had grilled fish and chips and it was really nice.

Ashlee xx

One picture is of us having a bit of fun in the inflatable boat. We don’t take our big boat all the way up here… so we just muck around in this one. It’s hard when it’s windy.

Another is of me fishing on the jetty.  It was a shame that I didn’t catch any black bream because they are so nice to eat.

One is of us eating our breakfast on the beach. It was cold this morning so we didn’t snorkel.  The other one is of doing our washing up beach style !!

Sophie and Eleesha- Sustainability Superstars!

Sophie and Eleesha- Sustainability Superstars!

Last night, Sophie and Eleesha went home and created an amazing poster about recycling, reusing and reducing.
In the poster they discuss why recycling is important, what happens when we don’t recycle, what we are doing at school as well some great photos. This is fantastic initiative. Well done girls!

Mr G suggested the girls look up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. I look forward to people looking this up and commenting with information. If you find any good websites about recycling or looking after our environment, please copy and paste the link as a comment, or email it to me.

Click on the photo to make it larger. It is a little hard  to read, but it is worth the effort!

Rubbish Collection

Rubbish Collection

Today we learnt that some people at our school have been throwing their rubbish into the gardens and onto the ground on rubbish free days.

We decided to collect all the rubbish today to see what we found. It was disgusting! We found old food, chip packets and all sorts of other rubbish.

We discussed what happened to this rubbish and the damage it can do to the environment.

Have a look at the photos below and leave a comment with what you think.
Where would this rubbish go?
Were you surprised how much rubbish we collected?
What rubbish did you find?
What surprised you the most?
