CLASS ELECTION

CLASS ELECTION

We are in the middle of a class election campaign in which we are putting our Government and voting knowledge to use.

We have FOUR parties, with the leaders being Niamh, Nikita, Bree and Maitane.

After the election, the winner will take the class in a ONE HOUR activity of their choice.

Good luck to everyone! I will put any material on the blog that I am sent!

Here is a video sent in by The Sporty Smarties with their leader Niamh.

CLASS ELECTION

CLASS LEADER

This term we have been looking at Government and how it is formed.

We are going to have a class election, with the winner to take the class for an activity of their choice, for a period of one hour.

Over the next couple of days we will form parties within the class, and run an election campaign. We will have speeches, posters, how to vote cards and anything else to get the voters onside!

If you would like to be considered for one of our party leaders, you must let me know tomorrow.

You must include:

Your name, activity planned and a brief overview or description of your activity. This may be changed later.

As we discussed in class, you must be well organised, can run a small group, confident and responsible, have sensible (BUT FUN!) ideas, team skills, leadership skills and be prepared to lose an election (and join in the rest of the fun!).

If you have any great ideas, add them below!

Lapathon 2011

Lapathon 2011

Check out the pictures below from this year’s Lapathon. We had a great morning, and some very tired and sore bodies afterwards!

We worked out that LA 19 ran a total of 80.1km (267 laps of the oval) in approximately 40 minutes! A great effort! Everyone was surprised to see the distance they ran once we worked it out. GREAT WORK!

End of Year Assembly CHALLENGE

End of Year Assembly CHALLENGE

LA 18, 19 and 23 are working together to perform an item at the End of Year Assembly.

We will be performing our own version of ‘We’re all going on a Summer Holiday’. Each class has been given a verse and need to change the words to reflect something we have done in class.

LA 19’s verse is as follows:

Everybody has a summer holiday
doin’ things they always wanted to
So we’re going on a summer holiday,
to make our dreams come true
for me and you.

You have until FRIDAY to come up with new lyrics that fit into this tune.

You can check out the video below to check out the tune (Our part is 40 seconds into the video).

Have a think about UNIQUE ‘things’ we have done in class. Have a think about farming, chickens, poetry or anything else you can think of.

Write the lyrics down, making sure they follow the tune and bring them into class! You can ask mum or dad to help you…

SCHOLASTIC LEXILE INFORMATION

Scholastic Lexile

 What’s it about?

The Lexile Framework for Reading is an educational tool that uses a measure called a Lexile to match readers of all ages with books, articles and other leveled reading resources.

So what?

Earlier in the term all students in Year 5/6 sat an online test. This gave them a lexile score which can range from 0-1000+.

With this information students are to select ‘lexile books’ from the library that are of a similar number to that of their score.

Some books may appear ‘easier’ than your child’s capabilities and some may appear ‘harder’. The school does not set the scores of the books.

ALL STUDENTS SHOULD BE READING 20 MINUTES EVERY DAY WHEN POSSIBLE.

 What next?

Once students have completed their book they log into the Scholastic Lexile Website (Below) and complete a short quiz on the book they have read.

After they have completed THREE books their score may change, either up or down.

Students then get another book from within their range.

PLEASE NOTE

Your assistance in this process is paramount. Students should be reading at home and this program is an essential part of their learning and development.

Please encourage students to read the book they have from the library and complete the test when finished.

Please help your child remember that our library day is FRIDAY, and they should be returning or renewing their book on this day.

Clean Up Australia Day

Clean up Australia

Today we participated in Clean Up Australia Day. Our block was asked to clean up around the lake near the school. We could not believe the amount of rubbish we found! While we were happy that we were able to help clean up so much rubbish, we were disappointed that there was so much there in the first place!

Always remember to put your rubbish in the bin, and if you happen to see some rubbish on the ground then try to pick it up.

Here are some pictures from the day.

NAIDOC WEEK

NAIDOC WEEK

Throughout last week we had the opportunity to learn about different aspects of traditional Aboriginal life. Whilst our class focused on Bush Food, we also had the opportunity to learn through a fantastic performance from the Wadumbah Dance Group and a Serpent Walk through all the blocks.

Our main class activity was to make a poster with our group about a different bush food. We needed to use crepe paper to make the animal / plant and take notes from posters to give information to the reader.

Have a look at our pictures.

SCIENCE DAY

SCIENCE DAY

On Wednesday all the Year 5/6 classes participated in a ‘Science Day’ where we rotated between classes doing different science experiments. We got to play with candles and work out how to get them to go out, make rockets, separate liquids and go balloon surfing.

Hopefully everyone had a good day and was able to learn something from it! Comment below telling everyone your favourite activities!!

WAKIKIRRI

WAKIKIRRI SUPERSTARS!

Last night (Friday) I had the pleasure of watching Harmony Primary competing in the ‘Wakikirri Story-Dance competition’ at the Regal Theatre in Subiaco. It was a joy to watch everyone displaying the most spectacular dance routine and sharing a message with us at the same time.

Whether you make it to the finals or not, you should all be incredibly proud of what you have achieved and you are a credit to the school.

Well done to ALL the cast and teachers involved, but a special mention to Nikita, Niamh, Hannah, Maitane, Bree, Eryn, Shayla and Maddison from LA 19.

Unfortunately I do not have any photos, but if anyone is able to get me some I would appreciate it so they can go up onto the blog.
