Murder under the Microscope- Homework Week 1 (Environmental Issues)

Murder under the Microscope- Homework Week 1 (Environmental Issues)

In our first week we will be investigating the different environmental issues that may be involved in our environmental crime.

There are a lot of potential issues (ten in total- Mr Sim will do one), so I have given one issue to each group. This will mean you will need to do a lot less work!

Click Here if you have forgotten which group you are in.

This week’s homework involves investigating an environmental issue. EVERYONE must complete their homework task. DO NOT leave it until the last day, as it will take approximately 30 minutes per night to finish the whole activity. On Monday of Week 2 we will be using all this information.

Click on your group number in order to access your homework for the week (You will also be given this on Tuesday at school).

Group 1- Climate change
Group 2- Water temperature
Group 3- Runoff
Group 4- Nutrients
Group 5- Land use
Group 6- Flow, silt and sediment
Group 7- Stormwater
Group 8- Salinity
Group 9- Vegetation

This is a tricky homework assignment! If you find a great website, please add a comment so others can use it. I will also do the same!
Do not forget to ask mum or dad or anyone else for help as well!

Good Luck!

Touch Typing Practice

TOUCH TYPING

Today we practiced touch typing. That means you are typing on the computer without looking at the keyboard, preferably using the correct fingers on the correct letters.

It is something you can very quickly pick up, given practice!

Come to my Island- Homework Task

Come to my Island

Below is a description of an island I want you to visit. The problem is, I have not described it very well. Your job is to change it and add as many adjectives in as possible to make it sound better. If you want, you can change it to make it an island NO-ONE would want to go to.

You can also add to it to make it longer.

Come to my island. It has some trees and a playground. It has some birds flying around. There are some monkeys that will come up to you.

There is a castle on the island that you can visit and stay the night. The creek running through the forest is okay. You can do some stuff there too.

You will get there by boat, which has lollies and cool drink on board.

Strange Alien Encounter- Homework Task

Strange Alien Encounter

You have stepped off your spaceship and you encounter a martian (alien)! He does not look very happy!!!

You need to write one or two paragraphs describing what you do to get out of this situation. Do you run, talk to it, fight it or have some magical power?

The aim of this piece of writing is to use as many adverbs as you can. You should be using at least one per sentence. You should also be keeping up your use of adjectives. Remember to use paragraphs!

Strange Planet Description- Homework Activity

Strange Planet Description

You have been dropped off on a strange planet. You look out… What do you see?

Click on ‘comment’ below and type in your paragraph. Please feel free to write more if you wish!

If you are unable to access this, or it does not work, you will need to write it out as a good copy and hand it to me on Friday.

Please remember to include at least TWO adjectives per sentence! I would expect most of you should write at least 6 sentences, and many should be writing more than a paragraph. Feel free to comment on other student’s descriptions!

TIME TABLES GAMES and IDEAS

Let’s improve our times tables…

We need to get better at our times tables! We discovered this today!

Here are some quick ideas that you can do at home to practice your times tables.

  • Get mum or dad (or sister or ANYBODY) to test you. The best time to do this is when driving home, walking home or when sitting around at home.
  • Make some flashcards to test yourself (Put the questions on one side, and the answer on the other) and see how many you can do in 2 minutes.
  • Put a poster of all the times tables on a wall and PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

Click Here to play a car racing game!

This site below also has a whole heap of games for times tables. I haven’t checked most of them out so let me know what you think!

FRACTIONS

Equivalent and Simplifying Fractions

We have been working on equivalent fractions over the past couple of weeks, as well as how to simplify fractions. It is a very important skill to know, and the more you practice the easier it will get.

Click here for a site on Equivalent Fractions. Have a go at as many as you can and put your score on the blog.

If you do not understand how to do these, it is important to let me know so that I can help you further! Don’t be afraid to ask for help!

VOICE FESTIVAL

VOICE FESTIVAL

This is a reminder that the VOICE FESTIVAL is in WEEK 10 for those who are participating.

I will be starting coaching sessions with these students NEXT WEEK. It is important that you know your poem off by heart by this time so that we can work on voice projection, expression and speed.
